Koei Tecmo announced back in September 2015 that its fighting franchise spin-off Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 would be getting a virtual reality (VR) makeover for the PlayStation VR. Then in November the studio revealed Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 VR wouldn’t get a western release. That still seems to be the case, but for Japanese fans they’ll be able to get a copy on PlayStation VR’s launch day.
Reported by Gematsu, Koei Tecmo made the announcement at the Dead or Alive Festival 2016, which took place this weekend in Japan. The studio also raffled tickets at the festival for a hands-on event taking place prior to the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2016 in September. Only 100 fans will get the opportunity to demo Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 VR prior to launch on 13th October. The free-to-play version will also get a VR support update.
Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 VR moves away from the fighting roots of the Dead or Alive franchise by putting the characters on a volleyball court. Over the last few years the videogame has come under heavy criticism by the western media and videogame community for its portrayal of women, and it’s for this reason that the latest version won’t be released outside of the Asian market.
There’s still going to be enough videogames to choose from when the PlayStation VR arrives in October. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) stated at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016 in June, that over 50 titles would become available for the device by the end of the year.
