Crytek’s Frankfurt studio announced Oculus Rift exclusive The Climb back in December, and since then more and more details have been released by the developer. This weekend the team working on the project has released its first video dev diary giving an inside look at the inspiration and prototyping on the project.

Opening the video is Producer Fatih Özbayram, saying: “When we started the production of The Climb we did a lot of research about how real climbers climb.” To build the virtual reality (VR) experience the team went indoor climbing, seeing how they would approach the act of scaling a rock face, looking for areas to grab hold of and planning their route.

Elijah Freeman Executive Producer comments: “One of my favourite moments in developing The Climb was early on, in the prototype stages. At the very essence of the mechanic, we realised this was something unique, something we hadn’t experienced before.” Freeman adds at the end: “It’s interesting when you talk about VR, because we’re talking about presence in the 3D space, that presence allows you to feel very similar adrenaline, very similar excitement, as you would if you were actually there. So if you want to know what it’s actually like to climb a cliff face, you’re actually going to get that feeling.

The Climb will have players scaling the cliffs of real-life locations from around the world like Vietnam’s Halong Bay, in fully immersive VR. Crytek plans to have the experience ready around the same time as the Oculus Rift launches.

VRFocus will continue to cover the latest news on The Climb as the developer releases further information.
