A fair amount of virtual reality (VR) news and reveals have been the result of the Samsung Unpacked 2016 event tonight in Barcelona, but it wasn’t only the product announcements that took viewers both live and online by surprise. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage and shared the successes that Samsung Gear VR has experienced today, including some new statistics.

Zuckerberg first talked about how “VR is the next platform where anyone can create or experience what they want”, using capturing his daughter’s first steps as an example. But the real eye opener was when he went on to talk about how much users have already utilised Gear VR for video, sharing new stats that “more than one million hours of video have already been watched in Gear VR. So we’ve only just started to explore what’s possible with video in VR”.

On Facebook alone, Zuckerberg explains that “already over a million people are watching 360 video on Facebook, more than 20,000 of them have been uploaded, and hundreds of new ones are added every day”. Despite those staggering statistics, Zuckerberg went on to say that it was “still really early for 360 videos”.

The social media guru made sure it was known that Facebook has plans for making 360 video a staple feature, and also put great weight on the importance of integration amongst different companies to make sure 360 video, especially in Gear VR, can sustain, saying: “Gear VR is by far the best mobile experience and that’s because it combines the best hardware from Samsung with the best VR software from Facebook with Oculus.”
