In November 2015 WoofbertVR (WbVR) announced its Samsung Gear VR app of the same name. The virtual reality (VR) experience initially gave viewers access to The Courtauld Gallery in London, UK to discover spectacular paintings by Gauguin, Manet, Monet, and Renoir. WoofbertVR has had several updates since then and the latest takes you into the 1960’s studio of American abstract expressionist Helen FrankenThaler.
This new studio experience follows on from an update in March showcasing several of her post-war paintings. FrankenThaler occupied several studios during her career, with one located on the second floor of a building on East 83rd street and Third Avenue in New York City most noted. It was here she produced some of her most vibrant and groundbreaking work, where she laid out large rolls of canvas to experiment with processes of painting and the effects of chance and spontaneity.
Nowadays the studio can only be visited through black and white images by noted photographers, Ernst Haas, Alexander Liberman and Ugo Mulas. But with WoofbertVR this can now be achieved through VR.
