Position tracked controllers are central to providing immersion in current virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs). They give the technology its best shot at convincing players they’ve stepped into another world. It’s still far from ideal, however, and Gleechi CEO Jakob Johansson and CTO Kai Hübner will be talking about what is ideal at the 2016 Virtual Reality Developers Conference (VRDC) and Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco in from 14th – 18th March 2016. The pair will host a session simply titled ‘Enabling Hands in Virtual Reality‘.
“Hands are the most basic tools for people to use to interact with their surroundings, yet, hands are constantly avoided in games and Virtual Reality,” an official description for the event reads. “While different input hardware for hands are flooding the VR market, the output, what you actually see, is still at a crude state.
“With the help of 8 years of robotics research focused on hand interaction, the problems related to generating natural hand motion and interaction will be addressed. Through this talk the issues this creates for virtual reality and how to work with the large amount of different hand input on the market will be addressed.”
