It almost seems that if a tech event, show or festival takes place nowadays virtual reality (VR) will feature in some form or another, that’s a good thing, showcasing how far the technology has come in recent years. Taking place next month will be the first Edinburgh Digital Entertainment Festival (EDEF), looking to explore the abundant emerging opportunities of entertainment options. Part of the event will feature a VR cinema to showcase the latest 360-degree content.

The VR cinema will house 35 Samsung Gear VR head-mounted displays (HMDs), delivering immersive content to visitors. All the sessions are timed, occuring on the hour from 10am – 5pm, and will only be accessible to those aged 14 years and over.

The main part of the EDEF is the Tech Hub, an exhibition taking place in the ballroom of Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms. Here visitors will find a selection of interactive installations, demonstrations, and exhibitions of hardware and digital content; open daily through 4-28 August. Exhibitors confirmed so far include: VRTGO; HTC Vive; IglooVision; BBC R&D; Flying Object; Reflex Arc; Sky R&D; LordMiller Productions; Metro-Boulot Dodo; MyLupo and Wifiplug.

The Tech Hub will also include a series of talks, workshops, and live presentations with a gaming focus on 8th and 9th August, a VR + Future Technology focus on 15th and 16th August and Next Generation Arts & Entertainment on 22nd August.
