Virtuix caught the attention of the videogame of the wider videogame community last month when it revealed a video of its omni-directional treadmill, the Virtuix Omni, being used to play Bethesda Softworks’ newly released and hugely popular role-playing game (RPG), Fallout 4, in virtual reality (VR). The footage saw a player using the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) to step inside the post-apocalyptic wasteland for the first time. This week the company is following up that coverage with some more positive news; production of the Omni has finally begun.

Virtuix confirmed as much in a recent Kickstarter update post, where it noted that ‘at least one’ unit will be shipping to the company’s first Pathfinder participant within the next two weeks.

“We plan to ship all 50 Pathfinder units in January and ramp up our production shortly thereafter,” the company explained. “To manage expectations: ramping up our production and delivering our backlog of more than 4,000 Omnis will take several months. We realize the wait is getting unbearable, and we too are anxious to get Omnis to all of you. However, we need to take our time to ramp up production cautiously so that we can guarantee the quality of each Omni we ship. We will communicate a precise production and delivery schedule as soon as available. Thank you for your patience and continued support!”

Elsewhere, Virtuix will also be hosting a launch event for the Omni as its own headquarters in Austin, Texas on 17th December 2015. An Eventbrite page for the event, which will kick off at 19:00 CST, has been set up for those hoping to go. Registration is free and attendees will be able to try out the latest titles that can be played using the Omni and meet the team behind the device. Virtuix can be found at 1826 Kramer Lane Suite H Austin, TX 78758.

VRFocus will continue to follow Virtuix’s work with the Omni closely, reporting back with the latest updates on the company.
