HTC and Valve had big news to share earlier this month when the pair unveiled the new version of the HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Named the Vive Pre, this new device features an updated, more comfortable design as well as a front-facing camera that improves the kit’s chaperone system, allowing them to see outlines of objects and people within a tracked area without having to remove the kit. It’s not long now before the consumer version of the HTC Vive arrives, but in the meantime Valve is planning to get a Vive Pre to all of its current developers.

The company’s Chet Faliszek recently said as much in an interview with Tom’s Hardware. “So there are some developers that already have it and have been getting ready for CES and the upcoming Valve Content Showcase in Seattle, but not everybody has had a unit where the camera has been working, so it’s going to be interesting to see what they do with the camera when they get a Pre,” he said.

“So that’s one of the reasons why we’re going to have 7,000 dev kits go out. The idea is that every developer will get a new kit, [and] we’ll expand that group out, and the idea is to make sure that they can play with it, and to see [what] comes from it, right?”

The HTC Vive will be launching in April 2016, with pre-orders going live along with information on pricing and more in February. Next week will also see Valve host a content showcase for the device in Seattle, Washington where new experiences will be revealed.
