It’s so easy to get caught up in the minutia of photography. Sure, megapixels, microcontrast, MTF charts, and the like are all important, but only after you understand how to work with the most important piece of the photographic puzzle: light.

Light is the subject of JP Morgan’s latest Slanted Lens series, The Laws of Light, and we’re already up to Part 2. Part 1 focused on the sphere; in Part 2, JP uses a cube to illustrate how those same basic rules change when there are hard edges involved. It’s very easy to make this three-dimensional object look boring and 2D if you don’t properly control your light.

As JP said in the first episode: “These truly are the laws of light, the things that happen every time you turn on a light. You can’t change them. You can’t make them go away. But you can control them and use them to your advantage.” Particularly if you’re a photography beginner, go grab a pen and pad, and click play up top.
