UK-based Bossa Studios was on the first developers to get its hands on the HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) before it was revealed in March 2015. The studio used the kit’s position-tracked features, provided by SteamVR, to create a demo of its ever-popular Surgeon Simulator series using the controllers to allow players to operate on patients. The experience has since evolved into Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift using the Oculus Touch controllers. Recently, Bossa Studios confirmed to VRFocus that this will be a standalone experience, unlike previously updates to the title.

Studio CTO Sylvain Cornillon explained as much in an interview with will be published in full later this week. The developer began by stating what was new with this edition of the experience. “So now it’s becoming a full product with all the experiences, all the operations from Surgeon Simulator but refined for VR with the assets and the characters,” Cornillon said. “Bob has legs now because, in the original game, it’s just a torso. This kind of thing.”

When asked if these updates would be released for the original title or launched as a standalone videogame the developer replied: “We think it’s better as a kind of standalone product. It’s not the same as the original, it’s a very different experience. It might even be a potentially different audience because the VR control the experience is a lot more intuitive. It’s still the fun of Surgeon Simulator but it’s a more lightweight experience. So we’re still working on the gameplay and adding some elements to make a different challenge but, yeah it’s going to be a different product.”

Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality marks the first independent release for the title on PC since the original’s debut, then, though other versions have also come to smartphones, tablets and PlayStation 4. Check back with VRFocus later in the week for the full interview with Cornillon.
