When it comes to the PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4, it can be hard to work out exactly which content shown thus far will turn into a full videogame and which will remain as a tech demo. Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) London Studio, for example, has created one of the most compelling VR experiences in its London Heist demo, but it’s anyone’s guess as to if it will grow into anything more, while Square Enix’s recent VR demo for Final Fantasy XIV implemented the kit into the title with no plans to actually release it. As for Summer Lesson, the demo from Bandai Namco, new evidence suggests it could be a full release.
As of this month, Summer Lesson has been trademarked by Bandai Namco in Europe. This comes nearly a year and a half after the title was first shown at the 2014 Tokyo Game Show (TGS) in Japan, back when PlayStation VR was known by its codename of Project Morpheus. Updated versions of the title have since been shown at nearly every major industry event in 2015. This certainly seems to suggest, then, that Bandai Namco could be considering a full release of the experience, which has previously caused some controversy.
Summer Lesson is a first-person experience that focuses on the relationship between the player character and a student they share a space with. In the case of more recent demos this environment has been a summer home, though the title did originally debut with a demo in the student’s dorm. Developed by Tekken’s Katsuhiro Harada, the title attracted complaints when it was first shown, and was even removed from the show floor of TGS that year. The newer version, however, hasn’t caused any such controversy.
