Everyone in the virtual reality (VR) community is eager to see what the killer app for the technology will end up being. This refers to a piece of software that so powerfully communicates VR’s abilities that it proves to be a hit, selling units in no time. Will it come from an AAA publisher or an indie developer? Either way, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), creator of the upcoming PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4, expects such an app to ‘come out of nowhere’.

Head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said as much in a recent interview with Fortune. “It’s a completely new medium and the best of VR games will come out of nowhere, just as games on mobile or other new platforms like Facebook emerged,” he said of VR. “The most successful game companies on these new technology platforms were not established conventional game publishers, but small startups that spent many years focused on making games on this new tech. I expect the same will happen with VR. Hopefully, all of the game industry will develop on this new tech, but the most successful titles will be something that we never thought of in a new IP or a new game that’s focused on great experiences using VR tech.”

VR’s killer app may still be waiting in the wings, then, but don’t look for it to come from the likes of EA, Activision or other publishers. SCE itself is starting up a brand new developer to create content exclusively for PlayStation VR, though don’t expect to see anything from the new team until well past the kit’s launch given that it was only established earlier this year. PlayStation VR itself is currently heading towards a H1 2016 release, though a specific price and release date are yet to be revealed.
