Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) introduced what was said to be a near-final version of its PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March. The kit, then known under its codename of Project Morpheus, included a few upgrades such as a 1080p OLED display and improved tracking, all of which are expected to be present in the full consumer version when it goes on sale next year. But some small updates to the device have also been made since then, as seen at last week’s PlayStation Experience fan event in San Francisco, California.
During the event VRFocus was told by a source actively involved in PlayStation VR’s direct development that the kit’s screen output had improved since its last showing at the Paris Games Week (PGW) event back in October 2015. It isn’t said to be a dramatic upgrade, but does improve the display of black colours. It was also revealed that further optimisations are still being made to the custom display before the kit goes into mass production, so it’s quite possible that other small enhancements are made before release.
PlayStation VR will be launching in the first half of 2016, though SCE is yet to confirm a full release date or price for the kit. While its screen may still be improving, it already boasts an impressive 120Hz capability that can ‘reproject’ titles running at 60fps natively on PlayStation 4 at 120fps in-HMD. Developers also have the option to display their experiences in 90fps. At last week’s event SCE showcased a number of new experiences for the tech including the debut of Rez Infinite, Ace Combat 7 and 100ft Robot Golf.
