PlayStation VR, Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for the PlayStation 4, has a history with the Game Developers Conference (GDC). The kit was first announced under the name of Project Morpheus at the 2014 edition of the show in San Francisco, California, with an updated version shown off at last year’s event. Of course, GDC 2016 is fast approaching, taking place from 14th – 18th March, and is this year expanded with a Virtual Reality Developers Conference (VRDC). To that end, SCE has confirmed another major PlayStation VR presentation for the show.

As reported by IGN, the company is sending out invites to an event taking place at 14:00 PT on 15th March, with hands-on demos of content following until 18:00. Like last year, the event is press only. The company hasn’t confirmed what it could be announcing at the show; is this where fans will finally learn the price and date of PlayStation VR? After all, it’s now known that the Oculus Rift will be arriving on 28th March for $599, and the HTC Vive will launch on 1st April for $799, leaving SCE’s kit as the only major VR hardware that doesn’t have a date yet. It could be that new titles for the kit are revealed too.

SCE will have other events surrounding PlayStation VR at GDC. A wide range of talks and sessions focused on developers will be taking place throughout the week, giving attendees tips on how to work with the device and its features. The kit is expected to be launching in the first half of 2016 so, if release details are to be revealed soon, GDC is perhaps the last big event to do so, even if it’s not a strictly consumer-facing event. The kit boasts a 1080p OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate that can ‘reproject’ experiences at 120fps in-HMD.
