PlayStation VR, Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4 should be out between the next 2 to 8 months. The kit is due to launch in the first half of 2016, meaning many VR fans are currently asking after launch details such as pricing and software line-up. SCE itself isn’t sure of these aspects just yet, however, specifically noting that it can’t confirm any titles for launch just yet, even if other developers already have.
Head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida recently said as much in an interview with Digital Spy. “We don’t know the launch date or the launch titles yet – they’re probably wrong, but maybe,” he said when the site brought up the news that Rebellion’s Battlezone had been announced as a launch title for the device. “Another announcement I saw was [Thomas Was Alone creator] Mike Bithell said that the Volume VR version is going to be the launch title. Of course he doesn’t know because we don’t know either. We’ll know that next year. But it’s great that almost every week we see some new announcement, it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on in the VR world now.”
Responding to the question of when Guerrilla Cambridge’s multiplayer shooter, RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, might release, Yoshida said: “I’m hoping RIGS is going to be one of the launch titles, but we haven’t set the launch date. The developer has a certain date in mind for targeting release, because it’s all so new that we can kind of scale the volume of contents after the launch, just as many games are doing. We haven’t even decided the final volume of content, whether we release it on physical disc or download only. These kind of things need to happen… soon.”
VRFocus will continue to follow PlayStation VR closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
