For those that think virtual reality (VR) is just a fad, you just have to point them in the direction of all the major companies investing in the technology, and the content being produced as an indicator of the effort being put into the industry. Today global broadcaster Sky has announced the launch a major new commitment to producing VR content with the creation of Sky VR Studio.

Over the coming months, Sky will be bringing a VR perspective on major events for fans of sports, movies, news and entertainment. The first content to be produced by the new studio are two films shot during Formula 1 testing in Barcelona, which will transport viewers to the pit lane, into the team garages, and out onto the track. The films will be released this Friday via the Facebook 360-degree video platform.

It’ll also be available through Oculus VR’s platform for owners of the Oculus Rift or Samsung Gear VR head-mounted display’s (HMD’s), giving the full immersive experience.

Gary Davey, Managing Director, Content at Sky, commented: “The Sky VR Studio allows us to add a new dimension to storytelling, taking viewers to extraordinary places and offering a unique perspective on a whole host of events. The development of VR technology is moving at an incredible pace and excitement is building about its potential. Our expertise across a wide range of video content, from original drama to live sport, gives us a unique ability to bring VR to life for customers. This is just the start and we’re looking forward to creating more amazing VR content and exploring the possibilities with our tech and content partners.”

The company plans to create 20 VR films over the coming year, and later on in 2016 Sky will look to distribute content through a dedicated Sky VR app. VRFocus will bring you the latest news on Sky’s VR plans, reporting back any further announcements.
