Samsung is preparing for its next big press event next week. Samsung Unpacked, as the events are known by, will be taking place in Barcelona, Spain on 21st February 2016, which is just a day before the Mobile World Congress event kicks off in the same city. The company has already released a teaser for the event that suggests that it’s recently release mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR, will play a big role. Now a new rumour is suggesting that Samsung will be making it easier than ever to get your hands on the kit following the event.

Android World’s Netherlands site – as translated by Sammobile – is reporting that Samsung will be revealing its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S7 and its curved companion, the Galaxy S7 edge, at the event next week. Not only that, but pre-orders for the device will be going live day and date with the conference, and any that does lay down that early order will be receiving a Gear VR at no extra cost. The phone is said to launch on 10th March 2016, giving fans the window of a few weeks to take advantage of the opportunity.

If true this could be an important step in Samsung and partner Oculus VR’s journey to bringing Gear VR to as wide an audience as possible. As it stands right now, the consumer Gear VR is compatible with the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge plus and the enlarged Galaxy Note 5 and costs just $99 USD. It makes sense, then, that the device will be compatible with the latest Samsung smartphone, and the low price does make the possibility of a free kit seem more plausible. Still, it’s just a rumour for now and fans will know for sure come next week.
