Virtual reality (VR) fans have been enjoying Samsung and Oculus VR’s mobile-based head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR, for a little over two months now, and some great content has come to the device in that time. You might not be thinking about upgrading your device any time soon, but it appears Samsung itself is readying the next phone to support the consumer iteration of the device. Yesterday the company launched a teaser trailer for ‘The Next Galaxy’ with the help of Gear VR, suggesting fans have something to look forward to in the near future.

The 14 second teaser can be seen below and confirms that the new kit will be seen at the next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked press event on 21st February 2016. No shots of the new phone – presumably the Samsung Galaxy S7 – can be seen as it appears to be housed in the Gear VR unit that is being worn. When the user puts on the HMD they see a blue cube, similar to the logo that Samsung has previously used for its Unpacked press events. The date is then displayed, but no other details about timing etc have been given at this time.

The timing of this reveal heavily suggests that this will indeed be the sequel to the Samsung Galaxy S6, which was revealed a little under a year ago on 1st March 2015 at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain. Mobile World Congress 2016 will be taking place from 22nd – 25th February, suggesting that this will be where Samsung holds its press conference just before the show kicks off the next day. Little is known about the unannounced Samsung Galaxy S7, though VR titles would certainly benefit from any performance improvements it may offer.

Stay tuned to VRFocus for any further updates on the Gear VR.
