The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2016 event has begun in New York City with the company revealing its largest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7. Along with the devices unveiling Samsung has also announced a brand new Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) and its specifications.

The new Gear VR has been announced only nine months after the original consumer version of the headset launched in November 2015. The new HMD features a wider field of view (FOV), new type-C USB connector and backwards compatibility for previous Galaxy models.

The full spec list for the new Gear VR are as follows.

Dimension: 207.8(W) x 122.5(L) x 98.6(H)mm

Weight: 345g (312g without Front Cover)

Field of View (FOV): 101° Field of View

Sensor: Accelerometor, Gyrometer, Proximity

Colour: Blue Black

Compatibility: Galaxy Note7, S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+ (USB Type-C and Micro USB connectors). USB-C pass through power and data support.

Samsung has announced Gear VR will be available beginning 19th August, with pre-orders starting on 3rd August, 2016 through certain channels. What it hasn’t specified is if this is a worldwide release or just the US to begin with.

It was a dominant showcase for the Gear VR at the event, confirming Samsung’s commitment to virtual reality (VR) and the system it co-created with Oculus VR.
