As a virtual reality (VR) specialist, no one is worried about the amount of support that Oculus VR will be lending to its Oculus Rift head-mounted display. After all, the kit – due for release in Q1 2016 – is the company’s lead product. But can the same be said for Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and its VR HMD for PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR? The device is ultimately a peripheral for a much bigger platform, and past issues with add-ons such as PlayStation Move give weight to concerns the company might not support it properly.

But Reload Studios, the developer of upcoming VR multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS), World War Toons, doesn’t see a reason to worry. The team’s Will Lewis said as much when recently asked if he thinks PlayStation VR will see the same support as the Oculus Rift by PlayStation LifeStyle. “With Sony and the PlayStation 4 being such powerhouses in the gaming industry, I don’t see how [PlayStation VR] couldn’t get the same amount of support,” Lewis said. “Gamers are ready for VR and we’re happy to be a front runner for this emerging technology.”

Indeed, many of the third-party and indie developers that are working on the Oculus Rift and the other PC-based HMD, the HTC Vive, are also planning on bringing their projects to PlayStation VR. It certainly helps that each of these devices has a respective position-tracked input solution. The Oculus Rift has the Oculus Touch while the HTC Vive has the SteamVR controllers. PlayStation VR, on the other hand, has the chance to breathe new life into the previously-mentioned PlayStation Move controllers. With this parity between the devices, it will be easier for developers to port between HMDs.

VRFocus will continue to follow PlayStation VR and all other VR HMDs closely, reporting back with the latest updates from them.
