Prism Studios’ Portal Stories: VR is now available to download, offering HTC Vive owners a new and unique way to explore the world of Valve’s Portal franchise. A fan-made mod, Portal Stories: VR was originally a standalone product, however a agreement with Valve for the use of the Portal name saw the title adapted as a mod requiring Portal 2.

Portal Stories: VR is the successor to Prism Studios’ first Portal 2 mod, Portal Stories: Mel. Building on those foundations, Portal Stories: VR features 10 brand new puzzles specifically designed to work using the 360 degree roomscale that the HTC Vive and SteamVR offer. The videogame includes a brand new story in the Portal universe, with the player beginning inside Aperture Science’s laboratories.

Players will be given access to the new Aperture Science Instant Teleportation Device and the Aperture Science Apparatus Retrieval Tool to engage with the environment, solving new puzzles designed for roomscale gameplay. Portal Stories: VR has been built using Unreal Engine 4 to give Aperture Science’s laboratories a fresh new look, with new models, textures and particle effects.

After some initial hurdles relating to the naming of the videogame, Portal Stories: VR developers Prism Studios reached a new agreement with Valve to see the launch of the title go ahead. While Portal Stories: VR is listed as a mod for Portal 2 it merely requires the user to have purchased Valve’s videogame via Steam. Portal 2 is not required to be installed to play Portal Stories: VR.
