Samsung and Oculus VR have set a minimum age limit of 13 years old for the pair’s Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), which is the only major HMD currently available to consumers. It’s not surprising, then, that there’s a lack of VR experiences that are aimed at children, bar a precious few examples such as Jake & Tess’ Finding Monsters Adventure. Julian Sarmiento, Visual Effects & Virtual Reality Creative and Technical Supervisor at Mirada Studios, wants to change that, however, with his new VR application, Peekaboo VR.

Peekaboo VR is a content portal that features a 360 degree space in which children can take part in a number of experiences that are both educational and encourage exploration. One such activity involves reading VR storybooks that allow them to interact with the world. Topics will include the likes of ‘Human Evolution’ and ‘Space Exploration for Fun’. All of these are created specifically for VR using techniques such as 3D audio.

“The kids’ space is a major global market, and with Peekaboo VR we can now deliver amazing pioneering content,” said Pia Lindstrom, Sarmiento’s partner from the Cult Collective.

It’s not yet clear which HMDs Peekaboo VR will become available for, though the picture above suggests Gear VR and Google Cardboard could be two platforms. It’s also not yet clear just when it will be launching. A website has been set up but only includes the logo for the title so far. For the latest updates on the software, keep reading VRFocus.
