Oculus VR is playing its cards close to its chest when it comes to pre-order data for its Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). The company has refused to share any figures about how many people have laid down an early order for the anticipated device before it starts shipping later this month. HTC, on the other hand, is taking a different approach. The Taiwanese smartphone maker launched the pre-order campaign for its own HMD, the HTC Vive, yesterday, and has already revealed how many units it sold in the first 10 minutes of going on sale.
The company’s Shen Ye has revealed that HTC shifted some 15,000 units of the device in that time and, of course, it will have sold even more since then. “Woah, more than 15k units in less than 10min,” Ye wrote on his Twitter account. Videogame fans used to consoles selling over a million units on launch days may not think this is very much, but when you consider that the HTC Vive requires a high-powered PC to run and the relatively limited marketing campaign when compared to the likes of a PlayStation or Xbox, expectations should be adjusted.
There’s also the fact that the HTC Vive costs some $799 USD, with international shipping adding more onto the price for other countries. For that price customers are getting the HMD itself, two position tracked controllers to bring their hands into VR with them, two Lighthouse base stations for Room Scale user-tracking, and free copies of Google’s Tilt Brush, Owlchemy Labs’ Job Simulator, and Northway Games’ Fantastic Contraption.
At $599, does this also give an indication of how pre-orders for the Oculus Rift are performing? Or has Oculus VR managed to shift many more units thanks to the lower price and promises of exclusive content?
