Although it’s technically the launch day for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), many fans looking to pick a unit up still won’t have their hands on it for some time. With pre-orders backdated all the way into July 2016, today is just the beginning of a long period of rollouts for the device. In fact, even the first people to pre-order the device when the campaign went live back in January 2016 won’t be receiving their kits today.
Updating everyone on the status of shipping today, Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey confirmed that it would be those that purchased a developer kit for the Oculus Rift through the 2012 Kickstarter campaign that would be getting their units today. Oculus VR confirmed that these customers would be getting a free consumer version of the device back in January. As for the first pre-ordered units? They’re set to arrive mid-week.
“Stay tuned for future updates,” Luckey added, “I will give them as soon as possible – this particular update was set in stone just hours ago!” It’s not clear just how many pre-ordered units will be able to go out this week, though Oculus VR remains insistent that every unit made has already been claimed and will be on its way to a new owner as soon as possible.
