NVIDIA plays an important role in the virtual reality (VR) community right now. The company’s graphics cards are arguably the most important component of VR-ready PCs and both Oculus VR and HTC have stated that the recommended requirement to run both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive is the GeForce GTX 970. Yesterday however the company revealed its brand new graphics cards that surpass that minimum requirement, and now the price and release dates for both have been revealed.
The news came from an event held by NVIDIA in Austin, Texas, where Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of NVIDIA spoke and revealed that the higher-end GeForce GTX 1080 will run at 9 teraflops with 8 GB GSX, and the more affordable GeForce GTX 1070 will run at a speed of 6.5 teraflops with 8GB GS. Huang expressed the company’s enthusiasm for VR by stating that “We’ve dedicated ourselves to advancing this art form.”
Both cards will be releasing on different dates as the GeForce GTX 1080 will be coming out the soonest as it can be expected on 27th May and will be on the market at $599 USD, with the Founders Edition coming at $699, whereas the GeForce GTX 1070 is set a little under a month later on 10th June at the price of $379, and the Founders Edition for this lower costing graphics card will be $449.
NVIDIA has set the industry standard with the release of these low-cost high-grade graphics cards as they operate at a 10% gain in power efficiency and will still be faster than the Titan X, so it will be interesting to see what AMD will do in light of this news. It also remains to be seen is Oculus VR or HTC will base their VR-ready PC recommendations off of the new developments made by NVIDIA.
