With Microsoft coining the term ‘mixed reality’ (MR) for its upcoming HoloLens head-mounted display (HMD), you might think that the tech company is the only one working in this relatively new space. But that isn’t the case; Magic Leap is also working on what appears to be a similar concept, showcasing virtual objects in the real world that can be interacted with. The company has kept much of its work under wraps thus far, but has this week revealed a brand new video that showcases the tech once more. Said video can now be seen below.

As the short clip reveals, Magic Leap shot this footage directly on 14th October 2015. No special effects or compositing were used in its creation. It shows an office environment that’s augmented with virtual characters and items. These include a hovering robot that hides underneath a desk and a 3D depiction of the solar system that rests on a work surface. To show the full extent of the tech, the camera leans in to get a detailed view of the latter showcase. The footage was first shown at the Wall Street Journal Technology Conference earlier this week.

There’s still a lot to learn about Magic Leap, including news of an anticipated consumer launch and pricing. As for HoloLens, Microsoft recently announced that the first development edition of the device would be up for pre-order in January 2016 for studios that successfully apply to get a kit. The tech will then arrive sometime in Q1 2016 for those that are willing to part with $3,000 USD to get their hands on it. Is this the same kind of price that Magic Leap is expecting to charge for dev kits of its tech or will it be able to reduce the cost somewhat?

VRFocus will continue to follow Magic Leap closely, reporting back with the latest updates from the company.
