National Multiple Sclerosis Society Collaborates with Luma on VR Campaign

Last week the National Multiple Sclerosis Society held its MS Awareness Week in the US with various media and social media initiatives. As part of the promotion the Society launched two virtual reality (VR) experiences for a campaign called “Together We Are Stronger”, which combines the power of storytelling, the strength of shared connections and new technology.

The two films were created through a collaboration with Luma a Santa Monica and Melbourne-based VFX studio, along with John X Carey at Tool of North America and Wieden + Kennedy.

The first film is titled Off My Wave, it features professional longboarder Robert “Wingnut” Weaver a good friend of Steve a local surfer from Ocean Beach, California who was diagnosed with MS. A few years after his diagnosis, his ability to balance and ride waves started to fade so Weaver took to the waves with a 360-degree camera so that Steve could once again experience the joy of being in the water.

Exit Stage Never is the second film and has been created for Amy, a longtime professional dancer from NYC, who was diagnosed with MS in 1997. LaTonya Swann, a fellow professional dancer and BET’s Born to Dance winner, dances to share with Amy a new dance experience.

“Collaborating with John X Carey at Tool of North America and Wieden+Kennedy on the MS Society campaign was a truly rewarding experience for the team at Luma,” says Jay Lichtman, Luma Managing Director. “The prospect of helping to bring John’s beautifully captured imagery to life within a fully immersive 360-environment, along with the fact that we would be enabling MS patients to interact once again with their passions for surfing and dancing, was an opportunity we eagerly embraced.”

Both 360-degree films can be seen below, and controlled with a mouse or WASD keys. For the full immersive experience view the films through the YouTube app app on a smartphone in combination with a Google Cardboard headset.

VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest VR news and announcements as they’re unveiled.
