Most virtual reality (VR) and 360 films span the average time of around five to 15 minutes, and so it could be considered an intense practice to produce something over an hour. It has now come that VR’s first feature-length movie will be coming to both mobile and PC based head-mounted displays (HMD).
Career Opportunities in Organized Crime, made by flimmaker Alex Oshmyansky and Akibimi Productions, LLC, is a movie that follows a film crew who is documenting a recruitment video for the Russian mafia – all in the style of a mocku-mentary, of course. The film was shown during this year’s South by South West (SXSW) film festival, and is watchable in both 360 and non 360.
Oshmyansky explained what he thinks the film will be like in a press release: “The film is an experiment to see what kind of experience a feature-length virtual reality film would be. I’m obviously biased, but I think it turned out great. The film is a whole new kind of cinematic experience that hasn’t existed before.”
The official release date is 31st August but is currently available to pre-order, and so Career Opportunities in Organized Crime will cost $1 (USD) online. It will be watchable on Android and iOS for Cardboard HMDs, and it is intended to be watched also on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, although it is said that compatibility with the Oculus Rift will be “available soon after” along with the Gear VR.
