Last month Microsoft revealed the developer edition of its HoloLens mixed reality (MR) head-mounted display (HMD) following the kit’s initial reveal all the way back in January 2015. This first version of the device will be going on sale to specific developers that have applied for a kit in Q1 2016, with pre-orders opening next January. It’s not clear exactly how many developers have already jumped at the chance to pre-order a HoloLens, but Microsoft has recently noted that it is ‘very very happy’ with the number.

Scott Erickson, senior director of the HoloLens program, recently said as much to The Verge in an interview following the showcase of car maker Volvo’s own work with the device. “We’ve had a really good uptake,” he said of the amount of apps the company has seen from developers. We’re not sharing numbers today, but we’re very very happy with the numbers. The interest in the HoloLens since we announced it on January 21st of this year has been — I mean, the phone doesn’t stop ringing.”

On exactly who was being selected for the process Erickson said: “We’re not really talking details about that. We want to make sure that people are truly developers. We know a lot of people are excited about the device, but we want to make sure that when people get it, they’re developing on it. And so we’ll take a look. It’s a very lightweight application, we talk about what programming languages you’re used to, or what your experience with AR, VR, 3D is, and we’ll do some checking on that. But it’s a pretty open application.”

The developer edition of HoloLens costs some $3,000 USD, though it remains to be seen how this will change for the eventual consumer version of the device. It’s also yet to be revealed when the market-ready product will be available. VRFocus will continue to follow HoloLens closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
