These first few weeks into the new year has seen an emphasis on virtual reality (VR) headsets, as Oculus VR launched its pre-orders for the Oculus Rift and the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2016 seeing a sizable showing. But that not to say augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) devices have been quiet either. New information has recently been revealed about the battery for Microsoft’s HoloLens device.
Speaking at an event in Tel Aviv Bruce Harris, a Microsoft Technical Evangelist has claimed that the HoloLens should last around 5.5 hours with average use, dropping to 2.5 hours with intensive use. As the HoloLens is a wireless unit featuring both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth those figures can be seen as disappointing but not surprising. Harris also mentioned that as Microsoft continues to improve manufacturing the cost and battery should improve.
He also addressed concerns over the devices field-of-view (FoV) which has been mentioned by many who’ve tried HoloLens, and is something that doesn’t come across in the promotional on-stage demonstrations the company has held. Using the HoloLens will be akin to viewing a 15-inch monitor that’s about two feet away from you, he explained.
The developer edition of HoloLens will cost $3,000 USD, and limited to two per company. Pre-orders are expected to go live in Q1 this year and VRFocus will continue to follow HoloLens closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
