With augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) starting to garner as much attention as virtual reality (VR), companies are developing new partnerships in their quest to advance the technology. Microsoft with its HoloLens head-mounted display (HMD) has now announced a partnership with Autodesk Fusion 360 to create solutions that could change the way industrial designers, mechanical engineers and others design products.
“When we first saw HoloLens, we immediately sensed the possibilities for 3D engineering and industrial design. And after spending a bit of time with HoloLens, I realized how limiting it is to view 3D objects on a relatively small, flat screen rather than being able to use my entire real-world workspace for 3D design projects”, wrote Garin Gardiner in a Autodesk blog posting.
“Working in mixed reality is far more than just putting a holographic 3D model in front of you. It changes every aspect of how you work with your data, environment, peers and customers.”
The announcement comes on the back of an initial collaboration between the two companies for a project called ‘Freeform’, the goal being to explore the possible ways designers and engineers could use HoloLens in their everyday working environment.
Currently though the project isn’t yet available for public use, one reason is its still in development and the other is the availability of Microsoft’s HoloLens device.
The tech giant has already stated it’s very happy with the interest its seen for pre-orders of the HMD. Pre-orders for the developer edition will begin taking place in Q1 2016 at $3000 per unit, with a maximum of two per application.
