Earlier in the year VRFocus reported on the news that Merge VR, an upcoming mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) was to be sold both in-store and online at popular UK videogame retailer, GAME. It marks something of a first for VR in general, as this is the only HMD that consumers can pick up from a videogame specialist thus far. But, while GAME is selling the kit in the UK, the company behind the device is looking to another retailer for its US distribution. The company has today launched pre-orders for the device on the US edition of the Amazon store.

Merge is available for $79 USD at the mega retailer. The kit consists of a soft, durable foam unlike any used in other HMDs and supports a wide range of iOS and Android smartphones that have released within the past few years. It features dual input in the form of 2 buttons at the top of the unit that also allow users to slide and adjust the lenses inside. The site lists a 15th November 2015 launch for the US, though it’s currently scheduled for release on 30th October over in the UK.

“We’re thrilled to offer our product on Amazon.com to deliver a high-quality, easy to use headset to consumers this year,” Dan Worden, Executive Vice President of Merge said of the news. “Virtual reality is here and has a very bright future. There are already so many VR games, 360 videos and other fun experiences available, with more being developed all the time. We are providing consumers with a comfortable, durable and affordable virtual reality headset that works with the mobile phones they’ve already got in their pockets.”

VRFocus will continue to follow Merge closely, reporting back with the latest updates on the device.
