Today sees the opening of the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2016 in San Francisco, California. The two day event has kicked off with an opening keynote address with several prominent speakers from across Samsung as well as other companies. Taking to the stage today was Randy Meech CEO of Mapzen, who has just revealed the company is working on virtual reality (VR) functionality for its mapping software.
Mapzen’s open platform for developers allows the creation of dynamic maps which include features such as search and navigation. Alongside new map designs and the launch of an Android software development kit (SDK), the company is also exploring the possibilities of VR maps.
Still in the experimental stage Meech showed a demonstration on stage that flew through New York, detailing the roads and buildings in a monochrome style. Other details on which head-mounted displays (HMDs) the software might support, but with the Android SDK announcement its likely headsets like Gear VR and Google Cardboard will be supported.
