SMI has been one of the most mentioned names when it comes to eye tracking technologies in both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Now after announcing it earlier, its technology is being used in the Lumus DK-50 to create what they call an AR pair of glasses and will be showcased today.

The AR head-mounted display (HMD) is sensitive to the wearer’s gaze, tracking their eye movements as they look around, using SMI’s software to create a hands-free piece of technology. Not only will the user be able to see and interact with digital 3D images that show up on the screen of the glasses, but they will be able to interact with the hardware and software to have an experience with the least amount of thought needed to control it.

Lumus develops AR and “smart eyewear”, and with the addition of SMI’s track record, including its similar eye tracking technology used in the Samsung Gear VR mobile-based HMD, this is a partnership of two companies who can create an AR HMD that can potentially be effective.

Eli Glikman, Chief Product Officer at Lumus Ltd, commented on the partnerships of the two companies and what it means for the development of its AR technology: “Lumus is always looking for innovative ways to improve the AR experience. Beyond further breakthroughs in our waveguide technology, working with partners like SMI on integrating their market-leading eye-tracking solution is a perfect example of the type of cooperation between two leading innovators that can push the needle further toward mass adoption of augmented reality.”

The AR glasses, the Lumus DK-50 HMD, is to be showcased at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2016 today and tomorrow in Santa Clara in California, US.
