Many of the specifications for the upcoming Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) are already known, both in terms of the device itself and the PC needed to run it. Such details has helped enthusiasts prepare for the launch of the device in just a few weeks’ time on 28th March 2016. There is one piece of information that has eluded fans thus far though; the length of the cable that connects the kit to the PC it’s running with. This week, that information has finally been revealed.

Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey has confirmed that the Oculus Rift’s cable is a ‘big over 13 feet long’. Luckey said as much in reply to one fan noting that the cables featured in yesterday’s image of members of Oculus VR members playing Dead and Buried seemed short. The designer simply replied: “These are engineering samples. Rift cable is a bit over 13 feet long.” A number of developers have their hands on these engineering samples, which closely resemble the consumer version of the Oculus Rift. There are some differences, however, and it appears these cables are one such factor.

Wire length is especially important to VR HMDs as it dictates how far away from a PC a user can get and still be able to comfortably use the device. It’s even more essential for Room Scale experiences in which players will be getting up and walking around the environment, as commonly seen in the Oculus Rift’s main rival, the HTC Vive. The Oculus Rift will also be capable of Room Scale experiences, though isn’t receiving as much of a focus from Oculus VR itself.
