LG revealed last month during the Mobile World Congress that it had a bundle of new tech that will be going on the market, including its new smartphone, G5, mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), and 360 camera. It has now been announced that the US can expect to officially release early next month.

The release of LG’s smartphone marks the beginning of the company’s step into the VR world with its accessories, the bundle dubbed ‘G5 and Friends’. The mobile phone itself has an innovative twist in its design as it easily allows users to swap out its battery for a charged new one, and for ‘a limited time only’ LG will be offering a free spare battery, which when filming with a 360 camera parallels with the use of DSLR cameras.

The phone received 33 awards at the Mobile World Congress this year, boasting that it was ‘one of the most honored companies at the show’. Morris Lee, LG’s senior vice president and head of North American sales and marketing, said in a press release: “You only have to wait a few weeks to get your hands on the LG G5. It’s clear from the consumer polls being conducted by the media that people are incredibly excited about the phone and we’re very proud of the practical innovations in the G5 and Friends as well”.

The smartphone itself will be available early April, although no specific date for the VR HMD or 360 camera, more information on the spare battery promotion and details of pre-orders will become available on its launch website and will also be reported on by VRFocus, so stay here for the latest in VR news.
