The HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) is now just months away from releasing, with first shipping taking place in April 2016. That said, there’s still much to learn about the software line up for the kit’s launch, with only a handful of titles currently confirmed to be ready for release. This week, however, indie developer Legend Studio – known for Chibi Attack! VR – has revealed a brand new project for the HMD that it’s aiming to have ready in time for launch. That project is A Legend of Luca, and the first gameplay can be seen below.

A Legend of Luca is described by its developer as a ‘Rouge-Lite’ first-person shooter (FPS) that’s inspired by Nintendo’s ever-popular The Legend of Zelda series. As seen in the gameplay video, players use the HTC Vive’s Room Scale user-tracking and position tracked controllers to explore a dungeon, wielding a magical staff in one hand and a sword in the other. The staff appears to fire attacks while the sword is obviously used for melee attacks.

As they travel from room to room players will fight goblin enemies and collect and use items such as bombs. Information such as ammo count is displayed above the player. Towards the end of the footage a huge boss turns up, which players must avoid.

It’s important to note that the video here is listed as an early work in progress look at A Legend of Luca, thus many of the bugs on display will hopefully be ironed out before it’s time for the full release. It’s not yet clear if Legend Studio will be attending Valve’s content showcase later this week, where new experiences for the HTC Vive will make their debut along with some other titles.
