With the weeks quickly ticking down until the arrival of virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Valve has this week updated its Steam VR Beta platform. The company has released several new updates for the platform over the past few months in preparation for the headsets release.

The latest addition features improvements for both devices, with a fix for the HTC Vive requesting updates forever without implementing them. While the Oculus Rift has received a “Fix for black edges cutting off view when seated zero pose not directly centered on camera.” Alongside these specific updates several general enhancements have been made, and more are likely to arrive in the coming months.

The full changelog for the latest update can be seen below:

Chaperone:

  • Significantly increased ‘Base Station moved detection’ threshold.
  • Fixed regression that was hurting performance, especially on Rift.

Room Setup:

  • Fixed text being formatted incorrectly.

General:

  • Fixed Room Overview’s play area and collision bounds not always appearing under some changing Chaperone conditions.
  • Fixed the Firmware Wizard to handle manual updates correctly.
  • Fixed issue where some Vive Pre HMDs would request firmware updates forever, but not actually update anything.
  • Fixed cases where tracked devices would report that they were connected when they were not.
  • Fixed the ‘SteamVR always on top’ setting.

Oculus Support:

  • Fixed Oculus compositor blocking until vsync.
  • Added GPU fence between OpenVR compositor and OVR compositor handoff to ensure proper synchronization.
  • Reduced server pose update frequency to once per frame.
  • Fix for black edges cutting off view when seated zero pose not directly centered on camera.
