There are quite a few experimental virtual reality (VR) videogames on Steam, some good some not so. That’s not a bad thing per se, but it does mean that aside from the big name titles designed to showcase what VR can really do, there’s eclectic mix to wade through. Arriving today for the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) is a tongue-in-cheek videogame called Watching Grass Grow In VR – The Game, a title which does exactly what the name implies plus a little bit more.

Created by Pillow Head Games, Watching Grass Grow In VR – The Game put players in charge of an area of grass that must be nurtured into life. But the studio hasn’t just created a VR lawn to watch, oh no, as it also happens to be the end of the world and that luscious piece of green turf must be protected at all costs.

To help players in their green fingered mission Pillow Head Games has armed them with a rocket launcher – just what every gardener needs – to defend their grass from all manner of enemies. There are some evil red eyed looking dogs, people throwing explosives which make the grass catch fire and more.

All of this is happening while a giant asteroid is hurtling towards Earth, and the more the grass grows the more points players score before the inevitable end.

Watching Grass Grow In VR – The Game is a videogame that takes itself seriously, its just a bit of fun at the end of the day. It just depends on if the £3.99 GBP price is worth it to watch grass grow.
