Insta360 has released a carbon fiber selfie stick accessory! How does it differ from the invisible selfie stick? And could it be a hint as to the next Insta360 One X?
Selfie sticks and monopods are essential accessories for 360 cameras. Not only can they be used as a stand like regular tripods, but they can be used to create an invisible flying camera effect.
The ideal selfie stick for 360 cameras is ‘invisible’ to the camera (i.e., narrow enough to fit between the lenses of a camera, and remains perfectly in line with the camera), is durable yet lightweight, and is portable. Insta360’s original Invisible Selfie Stick is a monopod that fit many of these characteristics. Insta360 later created a second generation selfie stick with a narrower tip so that it would be invisible with narrower cameras such as the Insta360 One X.
How does the new carbon fiber selfie stick compare to the Invisible Selfie Stick? As with the Invisible Selfie Stick, the Carbon Fiber stick has a narrow tip and has no ballhead ensuring it remains in line and invisible to 360 cameras. It also has a standard 1/4-20 tripod hole in the bottom, to which you can attach tripod legs such as the Multi-purpose Tripod Stand.
The Carbon Fiber selfie stick has 4 segments (including the handle), collapses to 26cm, expands to 116cm, and has a weigh of 95 grams. By contrast, the Invisible Selfie Stick has 5 segments (including the handle), collapses to 28.5cm, and expands to 120cm, and has a weight of 162 grams.
In terms of stiffness, carbon fiber is generally stiffer than aluminum, therefore the Carbon Fiber selfie stick is probably stiffer than the Invisible Selfie Stick. This means that it is less likely to bend or flex.
Designed For the Next Insta360 One X?
Based on the specifications, the Carbon Fiber selfie stick offers similar features to the Invisible Selfie Stick. Besides the weight, the biggest difference is probably the Carbon Fiber selfie stick’s extra stiffness, which is an advantage, but the One X is already one of the lightest 360 cameras, and the Invisible Selfie Stick is strong enough to support its weight. Could the Carbon Fiber selfie stick be designed for a new, heavier 360 camera? If so, could the heavier 360 camera support a larger sensor and with it, larger lenses? Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
