Yesterday a report spinning out of last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) suggested that the HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) will be going up for pre-order on 29th February 2016. Fans already knew that the campaign would be launching next month, but CEO Cher Wang reportedly confirmed the specific date that they will be able to put down an early order on. As with the Oculus Rift, you might think that the majority of details about the consumer product will go live with the campaign, but it appears this isn’t quite the case.
Reporting on yesterday’s news, The Verge has noted that HTC told the site that the HTC Vive’s final design, price and shipping date would also be revealed ‘close to’ the pre-order date, suggesting that it could come shortly before 29th February. Fans won’t have to wait too much longer to find out everything there is to know about the kit and how it stacks up to the Oculus Rift, then. The latter device costs some $599 USD and will be arriving for the first to pre-order on 28th March 2016, with current shipping dates now pushed back to June.
A new version of the developer edition for the device, dubbed the Vive Pre, was shown off for the first time last week. It features and improved, smaller and more comfortable design as well as a new front-mounted camera that helps to improve the chaperone system. Whereas the previous system would alert players to the edges of their user tracking made possible with SteamVR’s Room Scale system, the new approach will also outline objects and people within that space, allowing users to confidently navigate around a real world environment with the HMD on.
