Valve and HTC’s virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) Vive has gained a lot of media attention since its unveil earlier this year, partly due to its Lighthouse Room-Scale motion tracking system. And because of this the HMD has received a number of nominations and awards from the videogame and tech industry. The device won Best Hardware incl Peripheral at Gamescom, Germany in August and was short listed for the T3 Awards. Now its received an award from gadget magazine Stuff.
The HTC Vive has won Stuff’s Innovation of the Year Award 2015 after beating a slew of other gadgets including Microsoft’s mixed reality (MR) headset HoloLens. The runners up were Amazon Echo, Apple 3D Touch, BT Sport 4K, Google Photos, ResearchKit, Spotify Discover Weekly and the Tesla Powerwall. It goes to show that VR is garnering more and more interest as the headsets near launch.
With the major HMDs from Oculus VR with Oculus Rift and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) with PlayStation VR due in 2016, VR will be hitting the consumer space in earnest. But as for the HTC Vive, HTC did say an initial launch would be happening at the end of 2015, with a larger roll out in Q1 2016. As its now December that 2015 launch doesn’t look likely, and so will the HMD really be available in early 2016 or are VR fans going to have to be patient even longer?
