HTC has begun its announcements for the HTC Vive today, ahead of the 2016 Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona, Spain. Alongside the head-mounted displays (HMDs) retail price of $799 USD, the company has also revealed a new feature called Vive Phone Services.
Vive Phone Services allows a user to connect their phone to the headset, reports Venture Beat, with other publications saying this will be done via Bluetooth. This will allow owners to make and receive calls, text messages, and check calendar invites all while using the HMD in virtual reality (VR). So there’s no need to break your immersion while in a virtual world, while you can stay in contact with the real one.
For $799 USD the HTC Vive includes the Lighthouse base stations for the Room Scale user-tracking, and two position tracked controllers that allow players to bring your hands into the experience and interact with objects in realistic ways.
HTC Vive pre-orders are due to open at 10:00am EST on 29th February with shipping to commence on 1st April, not long after Oculus Rift begins it shipments. There’ll be more VR news from Samsung later today as its Galaxy Unpacked event will be featuring the Gear VR mobile headset, and its new flagship smartphones are also expected.
