Over the past year HTC and Valve’s HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) has made appearances at a wide ride of events both within the videogame industry and outside of it. One place you might not expect to see the anticipated device, however, is a book fair. But that’s exactly where fans can find one this week. The company is currently at the Taipei Book Fair in Taiwan, where it’s showing off a brand new experience that puts users inside the work of famous Taiwanese illustrator, Jimmy Liao.
According to China Post, this piece will offer users a look into a scene in Liao’s picture book, All of My World is You, which follows a young girl in the wake of the loss of her pet dog. Users will be able to comfort the girl in a number of ways, such as patting her on the head to show empathy, or colouring in a drawing of her dog that can be found on the wall. The experience will be available to those that spend $1,688 NT ($50 USD) at the fair in a single day. The event itself runs until 21st February at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Halls 1 and 3.
The HTC Vive itself will be launching pre-orders in just over a weeks’ time, with a reveal of the full consumer version of the kit and other details expected to be showcased shortly before. First shipments are expected to be made in April 2016. A number of developers have committed to the launch of the device, though the company is yet to share the full launch line-up for the kit. It’s not clear if this new experience based on Liao’s work could ever make its way over to the west.
