Square Enix Montréal is one of the few developers owned by a well-known publisher to be working on virtual reality (VR) content. The team is currently working on bringing its popular mobile spin-off of the Hitman franchise, Hitman GO, over to the Gear VR mobile head-mounted display (HMD), made in partnership with Samsung and Oculus VR. It’s known that Square Enix is also working on the latter’s main HMD, the Oculus Rift, though it’s never been outright confirmed which of its studios is doing so and with what projects.

It does appear that Square Enix Montréal could be looking to work with the main HMD, though. That is according to a recent tweet, which revealed that Oculus VR paid a visit to the studio yesterday along with the Oculus Rift and its upcoming position-tracked controller, Oculus Touch. “Our friends @oculus are here to show us the new Rift and Touch controller,” the developer said in a tweet. “They both are amazing.” An image of a member of the team using the device can currently be seen below.

While it’s far from confirmation, the fact that Square Enix Montréal is already working on the Gear VR does suggest this could also be the Square Enix-owned studio that’s working with the Oculus Rift too. The studio has also recently said that it will ‘see’ where it goes next with VR. That said, other Square Enix teams are also working with HMDs. The developer behind Final Fantasy XIV, for example, recently showcased a demo of the title running on Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) PlayStation VR HMD for PlayStation 4. The demo isn’t expected to turn into full support at this point in time, however.

VRFocus will continue to follow Square Enix’s work in VR closely, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
