Over the years, legendary videogame developer Hideo Kojima has developed a penchant for posting pictures of himself using virtual reality (VR) headsets to Twitter. We first saw him getting to grips with the first development kit for the Oculus Rift as early as 2014, and in late 2015 he took to Twitter once again to post images of himself using the PlayStation VR (PSVR) headset and the Oculus Touch at the Tokyo Games Show.
Now, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that’s taking place in Los Angeles this week, Kojima is up to his old tricks and has posted a picture of himself using the Oculus Touch technology to his Twitter followers. He also posted another collection of photos of one of his partners Mr Yano getting to grips with the new PlayStation VR Aim Controller and the Oculus Touch.
Since the 2015 images were posted, Kojima has left Konami to form Kojima Productions and partner up with Sony. Kojima is attending E3 this year not just to try out the VR tech, but to also reveal his new PlayStation 4 exclusive project Death Stranding, the trailer for which was revealed at Sony’s press conference on June 13th.
Now that Kojima is working in partnership with Sony and his interest in VR has clearly not diminished, we wonder if we could one day see a Kojima VR title. The developer was recently quoted as saying that “VR holds the key to game development” and that he would indeed like to create something for the platform, though that’s impossible for him right now as his time is no doubt entirely taken up with Death Stranding.
Still, it’s encouraging to see that Kojima, as well as his partners, is still invested in and excited by VR technology and it seems likely that if VR proves to be a commercial success Kojima might just steer his development company towards creating titles for it.
