Last month CCP Games launched its third ever videogame in Gunjack, a brand new virtual reality (VR) shooter experience for the Gear VR mobile-based head-mounted display (HMD). The title released to high praise, but is only available on newer versions of the device that support the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge plus and Galaxy Note 5 smartphones, leaving the original Innovator Edition and its Galaxy Note 4 out in the cold. That seems to have changed this week, however, as the title can now be downloaded on the older device.

Gunjack can now be viewed on the Note 4 version of the Gear VR store and even be downloaded for $9.99 USD. It’s important to note, however, that CCP Games hasn’t yet announced its official release on the store and as such its launch could be a simple mistake, as updating Gear VR releases appears to push the latest version of the title to both store. That said, the developer is also yet to take the new version down, suggesting that this could well be the official release.

This fragmentation in releases is down to the Note 4 utilising older, less powerful hardware than Samsung’s 2015 smartphones. This has led to some developers delaying their versions for the older device. Ustwo Games, for example, has noted that it was a ‘struggle‘ to maintain a consistent 60fps for its excellent exploration title, Land’s End. Just how the Note 4 will keep up in the New Year remains to be seen.

VRFocus will continue to follow any and all releases for Gear VR, reporting back with the latest updates on the kit.
