Virtual reality’s (VR’s) arrival at the consumer market means that, for the first time, audiences will be able to visit iconic landmarks and wonders from the comfort of their own homes as if they were really there. One such location is the Grand Canyon. Immersive Entertainment, Inc. has this month launched a pre-release version of The Grand Canyon VR Experience, a brand new title intended for use with multiple head-mounted displays (HMDs) that will allow players to explore the incredible environment in a kayak.
This first-person experience allows players to simply relax as they drift down picturesque environments. Intriguingly, the developer is using procedural generation to make each trip unique and has implemented some early mechanics such as being able to throw bread crumbs in the water to feed creatures. The full version of the title will also look to support a dynamic day and night cycle, further interactivity with the world and AI-driven creatures.
Currently The Grand Canyon VR Experience supports the Oculus Rift HMD’s second development kit (DK2), although the developer does plan to support the HTC Vive. Integration with the latter will reportedly include a unique Room Scale tracking mode and the SteamVR position-tracked controllers. The developer hasn’t yet said if the title could come to PlayStation 4 support the PlayStation VR HMD, nor if it will implement the Oculus Touch controllers for the Oculus Rift later down the line.
Immersive Entertainment, Inc. is aiming for a November 2015 release for the full version of The Grand Canyon VR Experience. The HTC Vive itself is thought to have a limited launch around this time, with a full rollout taking place in 2016. The experience is currently available for £6.99 GBP, which the team notes is a ‘significant discount’ from the planned final pricing and will net players the full version too.
