It’s a big week for Oculus VR and Samsung and their Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). The pair have finally launched pre-orders for the anticipated consumer version of their device over in the US, confirming a 20th November 2015 shipping date in the process. International pre-orders are also said to be coming soon, although pricing for these other territories hasn’t been announced so far. That’s changed this week, as Samsung has finally confirmed a Gear VR price point for the UK.

As the company’s Jason Lovell announced at the VRTGO event in Newcastle yesterday, Gear VR will go on sale for £79.99 GBP. Of course that price doesn’t include one of the compatible Samsung smartphones users will need to operate the device. These include the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge plus and the Galaxy Note 5. Over in the US the Gear VR costs $99 USD, which works out to £65.08, so there’s a slight price hike here, though certainly not an unexpected one. That said, it’s still much cheaper than the Innovator Edition of the Gear VR, the Galaxy S6 version of which costs around £190.

That still leaves the question of a launch date for the UK up in the air, though Samsung and Oculus VR remain adamant that it isn’t too far away. The new model of the device is said to be 19 percent lighter than the previous edition. Samsung and Oculus VR have also lined up plenty of new software for its release including the likes of Land’s End from Ustwo Games, Dead Secret from Robot Invader and Bandit Six: Salvo from Climax Studios. The release comes just a few months ahead of Oculus VR’s PC-based HMD, the Oculus Rift in Q1 2016.

VRFocus will continue to follow the Gear VR closely, reporting back with the latest on the device.
