Multiplayer virtual reality (VR) is still a largely untested concept. Some titles such as EVE: Valkyrie on the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) will be supporting online play, but the latter HMD is the only one to really experiment with local multiplayer thus far. That’s changing somewhat this week as a developer known as ForeignVR is announcing one of the first Oculus Rift and HTC Vive titles to support local multiplayer. That title is Ruckus Ridge and a Steam Greenlight campaign for the experience is now up and running with a first trailer seen below.

Ruckus Ridge is described as a 1 vs 3 couch multiplayer experience in which one player uses the Oculus Rift while others share a traditional screen. The HMD user will have a first-person view of an arena and is armed with a gun that they must use to blast other players as they go about completing various other tasks within the arena. Those using the standard screen will have a top-down view of the arena and their characters will be armed with boxes they can hide in. The entire area is littered with these boxes, making it impossible for the HMD user to tell where players are hiding unless they memorise the layout or see movement.

In terms of controls, players will be able to download a free smartphone app that allows them to use the device to move their characters, but can also use a keyboard or gamepad. Several modes will feature including Crouching Box Hidden Box, Coin Collector, Take Cover!, and Red Light Green Light. The developer is yet to confirm if it could also bring the title to PlayStation VR on PlayStation 4 though, with the Greenlight campaign ongoing, it will likely be a while before we hear about this possibility.
